Your Iqama Is Expiring. Here's What To Do Before It Does.

15 May 2026ยท3 min read

The fine for an expired Iqama in Saudi Arabia is SAR 500 per day.

Per day.

Most people only find out how much that adds up to after it's already happened to them. A week of delays at the Ministry, a slow employer, a forgotten renewal date. That's SAR 3,500 gone, minimum, for something totally preventable.

This post is the checklist you bookmark and actually use.

What is an Iqama and why does it expire?

The Iqama is your residence permit. Without a valid one you can't legally work, open a bank account, or leave and return to the Kingdom. It renews annually (sometimes every two years depending on your visa type).

The problem is that renewal isn't your job, it's your employer's job. But if your employer is slow or disorganised, you're the one who ends up illegal.

The timeline you need to follow

90 days before expiry: Check the date. Go to Absher app, look up your Iqama status. Write the date somewhere you'll actually see it.

60 days before expiry: Tell your HR department or sponsor in writing. WhatsApp is fine but make sure there's a record. Don't assume they know.

30 days before expiry: If you haven't heard anything, follow up again. In writing. Ask for confirmation that renewal has been submitted.

7 days before expiry: If it's still not sorted, you have a problem. Call the HRSD complaint line (19911) or contact your home country's embassy.

The reason you start 90 days out is that medical tests, paperwork processing, and Ministry queues all take time. Starting at 30 days often isn't enough.

What your employer actually needs to do

They need to pay the renewal fee (around SAR 650 for most workers), complete the Iqama renewal through the Absher business portal, make sure your medical fitness certificate is current, and handle any professional licence updates if your job requires them.

You can check the status yourself through the Absher app. If the renewal shows as processed there, you have proof even before the physical card arrives.

Common problems and what to do

Employer won't renew, says they don't have budget: This is illegal. Your Iqama renewal is legally their responsibility. Document your requests in writing and contact HRSD.

Iqama expired while waiting: Don't travel. Don't leave the country without proper exit documentation. Contact your embassy if you need help navigating the situation.

Iqama transfer to new employer: Now possible without needing the old employer's permission in most cases (Saudi labour reforms, 2021). Apply through Absher.

The honest solution is just to not forget

The number one cause of expired Iqamas is simply forgetting. People get caught up in work, in family stress, in just surviving. The date slips by.

RemitDiary has a document reminders feature specifically for this. You add your Iqama, your passport, your work permit, whatever documents you carry. Set the expiry dates once. The app reminds you at 60 days, 30 days, and 7 days before each one expires.

It takes two minutes to set up. It can save you thousands of riyals.

How far in advance should I start the renewal? 60 days minimum, 90 days to be safe.

Can I check my Iqama status online? Yes, through Absher (absher.sa) or the Absher mobile app.

What if I leave Saudi Arabia with an expired Iqama? Don't. You could be banned from re-entry. Confirm your exit is clear before booking any flights.
